About the Singers Studio for Opera

The Singers Studio for Opera prepares you for successful auditions.

Directed by Mr. William Hicks and Ms. Alissa Grimaldi, this Master Class meets weekly, offering young opera singers a rewarding experience that helps them identify and achieve their fullest potential. Together, these two masters have decades of experience in all aspects of operatic singing and theatrical performance.

There are two ways you can participate in The Singers Studio for Opera:

As a PRESENTER, you participate in a “mock audition” for approximately thirty minutes and then receive feedback and suggestions from Mr. Hicks and Ms. Grimaldi.

As an OBSERVER, you listen and watch, and then join in the discussion of each performance. Commentary is encouraged from all Presenters and Observers.

A successful audition should always convey that you want the job enough to do the preparation. You are expected to:

  • Know the opera - read the entire score.
  • Know the musical style of the period
  • Understand the text (know what the words mean)
  • Understand the character you are portraying
  • Present the music with full integrity - note values, tempo, dynamics
  • Know about the composer and what they are trying to convey
  • Wear appropriate audition attire

Mr. Hicks and Ms. Grimaldi provide their students the support and encouragement they need to gain the confidence and empowerment required to compete in the field of opera today.
